Lightweight protection in Kevlar® and PU

Ortles Couloir has a sleek design, weighing only 725 grams, making it the lightest shoe in its category. This is possible thanks to the robust lightweight carbon structure, which forms the heart of the shoe. By using reinforced unidirectional fibre molded polymer compounds, our shoe developers have managed to reduce thickness while ensuring maximum torsional and longitudinal rigidity and resistance. The upper structure is reinforced with Kevlar® and PU for added protection and optimized flexibility around the ankle. At the ankle, the special carbon fibre Ankle Protection System (APS) is connected to the shoe by a joint. This guarantees a great range of motion in the longitudinal axis while walking. For protection against rocks, debris, and crampons, the upper is surrounded by a durable PU band. Naturally, the Ortles Couloir shoes are fully compatible with crampons, thanks in particular to the rigid carbon fibre structure and the reinforced bands at the toes and heels.

Effective insulation

The Ortles Couloir shoes have been designed in collaboration with mountain guides and professional climbers to keep feet dry, warm, and comfortable while preventing moisture buildup in extreme mountain environments. The double structure of the shoe features a breathable waterproof membrane, an outer stretchy nylon gaiter that is protective and comfortable, equipped with a heat-welded waterproof YKK® zip closure, and an abrasion-resistant PU band. Its stretch properties and the silicone adherent insert gaiter protect against snow and ice. Inside, the shoe has a robust nylon shaft and a warm synthetic felt lining for good thermal protection. To prevent frostbite on the toes, the toe area has an additional padded lining using thermal shield technology and a Responsive insole to prevent the cold from penetrating.

Agility, precision, and ease of walking

Everything in this shoe is designed to provide agility and support on mixed routes, ice climbing, and glacier crossings on rough terrain. The Vibram® Litebase technology outsole is designed to ensure foot stability. Weighing 30% less than a conventional sole, it represents a weight and energy saving while ensuring optimal grip, traction, and durability. The tread features a climbing zone at the toe, non-slip grooves, and progressive lugs for traction, as well as a heel zone for braking on steep descents. The Vibram® rubber compound maintains its performance even below zero. Underfoot, the lightweight carbon fibre plate with variable thickness ensures good stability, load transfer, and front-point accuracy and has been developed with specific thickness zones to provide flexibility and stability suited to different activities. Optimal walking ease, comfort, and precise fit are enhanced by the compact shape of the dual-density polyurethane midsole.
