Running reins are a modification of side reins. The reins start between the horse's front legs and run through the rings of the bit and back to the lanyard or saddle. Unlike side reins, the horse's forward and backward movement is possible by using triangular reins and framing the horse on the side. The correct version for putting on running reins allows the horse's head to be lifted easily just before the vertical. The reins are widely used as training aids for riding or lunging training.
