After a while, rust spots will appear on the soft iron bit. The horse likes the sweet taste of the rust and will produce more saliva, which will promote better acceptance of the bit. The blue color of the bit gradually changes to gray/brown with rust spots visible on the mouthpiece. Clean the bit with a damp cloth as the rust spots turn orange. This can happen if the bit is temporarily not used or if it is left in a damp place.
