Description
The 2001-02 season was bittersweet for FC Lorient, combining the disappointment of relegation to Ligue 1 with the joy of the club's first major trophy in its history: the Coupe de France.
The Merlus eliminated Rennes, Louhans-Cuiseaux, PSG and Nîmes to reach the final against Bastia. A victory by a single goal made the difference, thanks to a strike scored just before half-time by the speedy forward Jean-Claude Darcheville. As if a great final wasn't enough, Lorient also reached the final of the Coupe de la Ligue but lost to Bordeaux.
