For FC Lugano, the early 1950s was a period without much excitement in sporting terms. Still Swiss champions in 1949, the club, led by former Swiss World Cup international Tulio Grassi, slipped towards mid-table, very strong at home but less effective away.

In 1951, however, attention turned to other matters. After half a century spent at Camp Marzio, the club's status led to the construction of a new stadium, and the new Cornaredo stadium was inaugurated on August 26 of that year. It hosted a match in the 1954 World Cup and still remains the home of FC Lugano today.
