Portugal secured their qualification for the 1986 World Cup during the last group match thanks to a decisive goal from Carlos Manuel against West Germany. This famous victory in Stuttgart allowed the team led by José Torres to outpace Sweden and head off to Mexico the following summer.

The tournament itself was unfortunately not memorable, despite a great start and another winning goal from Carlos Manuel to beat England. A defeat followed against Poland and, while a simple draw against Morocco would have been enough to reach the knockout stage, Portugal lost 3-1.
