Description
As FC Lucerne approached its sixth decade as a major player in Swiss football, the 1959-60 season marked a turning point with the conquest of its first major title: the Swiss Cup. For one of his first coaching positions, Rudi Gutendorf led his team against formidable opposition, beating the Young Boys, national champions, 3-1 in the semi-finals, and then the defending champion FC Grenchen 1-0 in the final.
In front of 30,000 spectators at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, Robert Blättler scored the decisive goal before captain Paul Wolfisberg lifted the trophy.
