Catappa leaves, derived from the Indian almond tree (Terminalia catappa), help to recreate the natural environment for bettas, shrimp and other aquarium inhabitants. When added to the aquarium, they release tannins and other organic compounds that help maintain a low pH and gently tint the water. These conditions mimic those of habitats where the water is acidic and leaf litter is abundant. As catappa leaves decompose, beneficial microorganisms develop on their surface, creating a natural food source for shrimp, snails and newly hatched fish.
